| Opening
the Door to Reading
In this unit, children learn the skills that will help them
to decode, or sound out, simple words. Of the 44 sounds in
the English language,
19 are
vowel sounds. All words must contain at least one vowel sound.
This unit focuses on mastering the five short vowel sounds
produced by the letters a, e, i, o, and u. By combining the
consonant sounds learned in Unit Two with the short vowel
sounds introduced in Unit Three, children begin to decode
simple words and begin expanding their reading vocabulary.
In the
18 lessons in this unit, children will learn:
- The
short sound associated with each vowel:
a, e, i, o, and u
- To
identify short vowel pictures and words
- To
read simple short vowel words such as cap, hen, big,
hot, and rug
The Short
Vowel unit includes:
- •
18 Lesson Cards with a variety of games, activities, and
follow-up quizzes for each short vowel sound
- •
18 Pretest/Posttest assessment pages, one for each lesson
