Applying Skills for Decoding Words
The lessons in this unit cover a variety of advanced phonics skills, allowing children to read more complex and challenging words. Children will learn the sounds made by r-controlled vowels (chart, third), vowel digraphs (tooth, crawl), and vowel diphthongs (join, around). They will read words with silent letters (taught, thumb), and words ending in –le (table, whistle) and –y (cry, baby).

In Unit Six, children will learn to read words containing:

  • The r-controlled vowels ar, er, ir, or, and ur
  • Vowel digraphs
  • Vowel diphthongs
  • Silent letters
  • The letter y as a vowel
  • Various long o spellings
  • Variant spellings of the /f/ sound
  • Basic sight words

Children will also practice counting syllables and reading sentences for comprehension. By mastering the skills in this unit, children will be able to read more challenging, entertaining, and informative books. This final step in Phonics Pad is the first step on the exciting road to reading.

The Advanced Phonics unit includes:
